The Xenobiology Codex is live, weee!

"An AI-generated compendium of 96 pages of alien flora and fauna with fantastical sketches, illustrations, and scribbled notes and annotations, resembling the Voynich Manuscript."

96 page high-res print-ready PDF. Images created in MidJourney.

CW: AI-generated art

@anke Yeah, the necromancy cookbook was about that size too, I wanted to keep the images big enough for decent sized printing if people want to print them :)

@welshpixie This is so very much my jam it's not even funny. I love it.

@crashglasshouses Yeah :D But it has some different style pages in there too that don't look as Voynich-y.

@welshpixie that's astonishing detail. The sort of attention you'd expect for close up movie props🏆

@GracelessHippo Yeah! The PDF is big, I wanted to keep the images decently high res for people who want to get it printed :D

@welshpixie @ljwrites holy cow this is awesome and amazing. I'd love to learn more about how it was made! was the placement of things done with AI as well? this is fascinating

@cb @welshpixie agreed, and this is the kind of genre where the slightly "off" and eerie look of AI is actually an asset and not a detriment I think.

@ljwrites @cb The AI I'm using for these is Midjourney, it's in beta right now but you can sign up - It works through Discord weirdly, you interact with a bot and send it prompts to work with. For these, my prompts are things like 'manuscript with illustrations of plants and handwritten notes, voynich, codex, grimoire', you can give art styles like 'art deco' - it's a matter of playing with the right keyword combination to generate something appealing (cont)

@ljwrites @cb Then the bot will give four low-res thumbnails as quick generations, and the ones I like I can select to upscale, or I can re-run the same prompt to see if it generates anything better, or tweak the keywords and run it again. So I'll only upscale the 'good' results, then I crop off any blank space that sometimes renders around the edges, upscale and sharpen again externally, and assemble them into a PDF doc. :)

@welshpixie @ljwrites @cb I looked at those images last night, and was pleased that only like the last one gave me a tiny headache. 😅

They mostly just look like something you'd draw.

@welshpixie thanks for bringing midjourney to my attention. I've signed up for an invite. Fingers crossed! 😄

Review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

so I've been scrolling through my copy and I've been wondering what about this style of AI generated art appeals to for me. I'd have to say that, while the AI is trained on a general concept of a style, when it generates the peice it lacks any sort of weight or intent behind what it makes, where as a more living artist would have either a conscious or subconscious influence on its outcome. Pollock also comes to mind in that there's an identifiable style to his work.
These lack a certain element human direction or intention in their execution and it makes them truly alien, different, and deeply "other". That the training materials motifs and stylistic iconography already suggest otherness :nasa: makes the strangeness very authenticly alien feeling. @welshpixie has developed a wonderfully cultivated and curated collection from their prompts.
10/10 would recommend and get another 💵😊

i have been enjoying this immensely
a million thanks to you

it's like a dream book with a dream language

also, showing a far different side of your visual imagination (and "draftsmanship") than your mandalas (which first caught my eye) ...

so beautiful (and inspiring)

i am throwing a bouquet of gratitude your way!

@js0000 Ahh thank you! I saw you'd tipped - thank you for that too <3 I'm glad you're enjoying it!

@welshpixie wonderful, your AI art experiences convinced me to try it, it might be a great tool for worldbuilding, thank you for sharing!
