COVID, racism

@welshpixie This is driving me nuts

COVID, racism

@welshpixie also not that it matters, and it could make the racists even worse so I don't want to make a big deal of it, but I read the variant was first found in Botswana? Not that racists are known for letting facts get in the way...

COVID, racism

@ljwrites According to WHO, "The B.1.1.529 variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on 24 November 2021. " from a sample taken on the 9th but I don't know if that was from someone who had solely been in SA or what (who.int/news/item/26-11-2021-c)

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @ljwrites i read that a lot of people from botswana have been traveling to South Africa for vaccinations, because the ones that Botswana ordered for August still hadn't arrived by October

COVID, racism

@meena @ljwrites ooh! I think we have an excess of vaccines here in SA too, they opened up the age restrictions quickly because people weren't filling tje slots

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @meena well at least they're not going to waste and people in Botswana are getting vaccinated, though it would be even better if they could get jabbed closer to home.

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @ljwrites really underscores how little travel restrictions can help.

A test on the 9th sequenced 24th. That means for half a month people may have traveled with it from South Africa to other countries. And that's assuming it didn't originate somewhere else that didn't sequence the test even longer ago.

COVID, racism

@ljwrites @welshpixie

I'm no expert but it seems logical that pinpointing exactly where a variant emerges is simply impossible unless all countries' borders are strictly closed to any travel whatsoever.

And there's a clear difference between: (A) country where a variant emerges, and (B) country where scientists win the global sprint to isolate, sequence and identify a variant.

COVID, racism

@ljwrites @welshpixie

So, why are A and B conflated?

It's easier that way for sensationalist media reporting and for governments to feign "tough action," sure; but here's the list of countries (from OP) that are confirmed to have cases of the omicron variant:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, UK.

Why are only two of those countries facing travel bans?

COVID, racism

@shahaan @ljwrites @welshpixie even if A and B were correlated there's literally no point in shaming countries that haven't even been given the chance to vaccinate their populations yet.

It's completely out of their power to prevent it.

COVID, racism

@rune @ljwrites @welshpixie

I’ll add that many such countries targeted for travel bans by racist governments are ones which are not being given priority by vaccine manufacturers.

Like it was mentioned, people from Botswana are coming over to South Africa because their vaccine deliveries are delayed by months.

Meanwhile vaccine manufacturers are citing contract clauses to block countries with excess stockpiles from donating their unused doses instead of allowing them to expire.

COVID, racism

@shahaan @ljwrites @welshpixie as far as I can tell South Africa isn't even over 30% vaccinated yet? Which means they're carrying the burden of vaccinating other countries as well as being vulnerable themselves.

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @shahaan @ljwrites that's better than I thought, but still a farcry from European countries like mine closing in on 80% :blobawkward:

At this point we're only waiting for approval for younger children and political pressure on the remaining anti vax holdouts.

COVID, racism

@rune @shahaan @ljwrites We're about to have mandatory vaccines here. You can imagine how that's going to go down. XD

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @rune @ljwrites Headlines: “Anti-vaxx protesters end up in hospitals, but not from protest-related injuries.”

COVID: Nazis and the moderates vs Antifa

@shahaan @welshpixie @rune @ljwrites that's basically the reason why "the middle" has aligned itself so far right during the past year: because Antifa stayed home, instead of getting their head bashed in while counter-protesting Querdenker and their Nazi friends at Antimasker demos

COVID: Nazis and the moderates vs Antifa

@meena @shahaan @welshpixie @ljwrites coincidentally people online seem to be more radicalized on the other side too lately.

A lot of people getting really fed up with governments and corporations unashamedly trading lives for profit.

COVID, racism

@welshpixie
It's infuriating for me in the UK that I now have more months of peril because my government blocked waiving vaccine patents.

COVID, racism

@welshpixie the fuck?! This is some Trump level 💩

COVID, racism

@welshpixie I don't understand what the infography shows/means...

COVID, racism

@Rodrake They're implementing travels bans only on the African countries that have confirmed cases, as well as some African countries that don't have confirmed cases, but not on the 'white' non-African countries that also have confirmed cases; essentially they're displaying racial bias and blocking the countries with PoC

re: COVID, racism

@welshpixie So the Spanish flu misnomer scenario all over again.

COVID, racism

@welshpixie So basically, it's being called the South African variant because South Africa is one of the few countries paying enough attention to spot a new variant?

Honestly, right now I'm just glad that someone is doing a good job of spotting these virus developments. Because we all know that two of the biggest countries in the West are doing sweet FA...

COVID, racism

@not_on_pizza Yeah, and then the US and UK and their lackies are banning travel from a bunch of southern Africa countries, some of which don't even have reported cases of the new variant, because any excuse to block the 'Africans' I guess

COVID, racism

@welshpixie @Wayril this thing is so fucking ENRAGING and it keeps happening
