Everybody posting on public all the time and leaving their follows unlocked isn't a recipe for community. It's a recipe for cacophony.

I think Gargron and lain replicated the worst aspects of corporate social media by making Mastodon and Pleroma respectively default to everybody posting on public and everybody being able to follow everybody else.


@starbreaker one of the first things I did to my account was lock it and set unlisted toots as default

@starbreaker And they probably wouldn’t have become as popular as they are now, which I assume would have made them pretty much irrelevant.

It’s a ha problem with interdependencies.
