I love Frank Lloyd Wright designs but honestly his constructions can be really shoddy and just not made to last. So if it looks great but falls apart in 50 years, how great of an architect was he really? #architecture

Lovecraft was deeply racist. I see so much Lovecraftian fan art but not a whole lot of critique. I don't think it means we shouldn't read his work or even perpetuate the mythos. I would like to see a lot more explicit critique however, lest the insidious racism which infuses his stories takes root.

I'm reading Haruki Murakami's novels and stories in chronological order by release date. I just finished The Elephant Vanishes short stories from 1980-1991. With some of his stories, it's as if he's weaving out these fantasy situations that are just what he thinks would be the coolest and sexiest thing that could happen to his character. Sometimes it gets a little indulgent. My favorite is still A Wild Sheep Chase from 1982. It is very spooky.

Right now, I'm reading South of the Border, West of the Sun (1992). I'm debating just skipping this one. Right after this is The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (1994), supposed to be one of his best.

If you are reading something and not enjoying yourself, do you put it down or keep reading?

One of my favorite books from when I was a young lad was Sylvia Plath's diaries.

In the diaries I was reading, I'd guess she was 19 or so. I was 14, reading them. I was amazed at how I could read about a woman living fifty years before me, older than me when she was writing her journals, and that I had this window into her life.

She wrote about going out on dates, and people she met, her anxieties. It wasn't morose at all, actually, it kind of erred on the side of being prim.

Now, we have this idea of Plath as being the quintessential depressed, emo kind of person. But, she was really quite muted, very polite, and not wanting to inconvenience others or make social faux pas's.

Sometimes we force historical figures into the archetypes we want them to fit, whether they do or not. Have we done a disservice to Plath by giving her a mystique and characterization that wasn't really accurate?

I think the social media generation, i.e. me, has a lot to learn from Plath's constraint and cautiousness.
