Hey, this oil painting is starting to come together! The more I work on it, the more I come to understand why oil is such a favored medium. It’s a lot more forgiving than I thought at first, and you don’t need to wait for your current layer to dry to add more paint where you need it. And the blending is really really nice 😌

I'm a naturally lazy person, so I have to fight myself a lot to do the kind of disciplined things that make you a better artist. But I don't think I'll ever be able to sit down and make a color chart before I start a painting. More power to you patient people who can do that!

The first autumn chill hit today and it inspired me to some gothic imagery. Definitely ended up with a Castlevania vibe here. Gouache on paper.

Started to play around with oil paints again this evening. At first I got frustrated at how much the paint slid around on the primed linen, and how hard it was to control, but then I started blending it more softly and I had a click moment. That smoky halo effect around the tower, and the implied texture on the near hill to the right, would be really hard to achieve in water-based paint but oils made it easy.

Watching The Dragon Prince on Netflix. So far it feels like Avatar: The Last Airbender / Korra doing World of Warcraft cosplay. In a good way.

Just finished my new entry for the exquisite corpse my local comics group is making! The story is starting to heat up, I can't wait to see where it goes :D

Check out the story so far at

Finished my remake of another old high school sketch! This was a lot of fun.

I think the old sketch holds up pretty well, especially the bored expression on the guard. But in addition to color I replaced a lot of distracting detail on the background landscape with atmospheric effects. I impulsively added a curtain of rain around the floating island, which I think makes it look less ominous and more mysterious and ethereal.

WIP—I'm redoing another one of my high school sketches and I'm liking how it's turning out. I had mistakenly thought the original sketchbook had been destroyed in a basement flooding years ago, but I just came across it again!

More exquisite corpse fun! My friends and I have started a new story, this time with a way more high-fantasy (and manga-inspired) feel. This is a really fun exercise, I highly recommend it :D

Some friends of mine and I did an exquisite corpse ( comic and we just concluded the story! Here's the full 12 entries of "A Friend at Camp":

What does Thanos eat? We never see him eat, and we never see him work out, but he's maintaining a huge amount of muscle mass SOMEHOW

I’m finally watching the end of Infinity War and I would like to file a formal complaint Show more

I posted my full painting process video! It’s lengthy but if you’re into really granular details then perhaps you’ll enjoy it 😀

I looked this up and apparently no, they started with the Jungle Book characters and worked it out from there.

I like my story better.

New time-lapse art video in the works! This time I actually recorded everything in real time so I could selectively speed it up later. I'll post a longer video on my YouTube channel with explanations of what I'm doing at the various stages of the painting. For now, please enjoy 2.5 hours of sci-fi gouache painting in a minute and a half!
