Great-grandfather was an agronomist and no-nonsense man; when some higher-ups wanted him to say a bunch of ridiculous lies for propaganda, he refused.
This didn't helped anibody (yes-man are easy to find) but, obviously, ruined his career: he didn't care.
My grandfather, died some years ago as a fascist, "forgetting" what happened to his own family.
That's why I'm not surprised that people ignores recent history, especially things that didn't happened directly to them.

Funny. I kindda have the same story.
My great grandfather fought the nazis, got captured & imprisoned in a labour camp. Till the end at the age of 96, he despised all that was nazi related (among which the lepen family, not to cite them).
My grandfather, his son, till the end a few month ago, has been a dipshit racist, voting for & supporting french neonazis. 😒
