@Tdorey Often in an eclipse the shadow will be over a portion of the moon that doesn't coincide with the normal phases of the moon. Also, in an eclipse the shadow is diffuse, whereas the line of the shadow during one of the moon's phases is sharp.

@mappingcat OK. So I am going to ask a dumb question. I noticed the moon on walk to work this morning. It looked like a sliver (quarter?) moon. How can one tell an eclipse from a partially covered moon (without watching the whole thing happen)?
