@luka

I hope these get baked into every instance. Makes sense when you consider the level of open collaboration here.

@RussSharek @luka I have to admit that I won't be using them on tootplanet.space for concerns over violating the usage license of the CC iconography.

@InspectorCaracal @RussSharek @Curator "Creative Commons licenses the use of its button marks that describe particular legal tool and its icon marks that describe key license element, such as BY, NC, ND, and SA, on the conditions that you use the mark solely to describe the Creative Commons legal tool that applies to a particular work and, in a manner reasonable to the medium and context, include the URI or hyperlink to the relevant Commons deed on the Creative Commons server."

@Curator @RussSharek @InspectorCaracal looks to me that as long as icons are used for cc licencing and if url is added "if possible" the use of icons is allowed? creativecommons.org/policies

@RussSharek @InspectorCaracal I wrote them (info@creativecommons.org) an email (@Curator you're in carbon copy) let's see what they say.

@luka @Curator @InspectorCaracal

Easiest way to communicate is to be direct about it. Well done, and thank you.

@RussSharek @InspectorCaracal @Curator

hej everyone,

they answered on my email:

Hi Luka,

Apologies for the delay getting back to you; I wanted to circle internally to make sure before I replied. The consensus was yes, this is a great use of the CC icons!

Thanks very much for reaching out to us. Let us know if we can help in any way.

Thanks again!
Sarah

@InspectorCaracal @RussSharek @Curator i found out on my own toot.si that it is very easy to do copy a custom emoji from another instance to your own inside the admin webUI with a single click.

@RussSharek @InspectorCaracal @Curator @luka Does that only apply when referring to CC-licensed stuff, though? Or is using the non-commercial icon when discussing other non-commercial licenses acceptable?

@aschmitz @RussSharek @InspectorCaracal @Curator

i think it's meant to be used with Creative Commons licences. and yeah, their response was an answer to my description of case use in context of CC-licenced works.

which other non-commercial licences are you thinking about?

@RussSharek @InspectorCaracal @Curator @luka Not sure, just wondering. It's not super uncommon to say "sure, just don't make money off of it", although often a CC license is safer for both parties and easy enough.

@aschmitz @RussSharek @Curator @luka I think it is fairly clear that you shouldn't label a work with a CC license that you aren't actually applying to the work, if that's what we're talking about...?

@RussSharek @Curator @luka @InspectorCaracal It's more a question of whether the email from CC indicated you could use those icons for things that aren't CC licenses, and the answer is still no. (Even though, for example, they're being added to Unicode.) Definitely not talking about licensing other peoples' stuff out from under them.

@aschmitz @RussSharek @InspectorCaracal @Curator cc licence enables you exactly that but as a legal tool that is enforceable. If you give something online without any licence I'm legally limited to do anything apart from listening right there. I can't put it on my blog or download it. I'm instantly a pirate.
But if you say :cc_cc: :cc_by: :cc_nd: :cc_nc_us: I'm not and you are protected from commercial exploitation and unauthorized remixes but people can share.

@InspectorCaracal @RussSharek @aschmitz

since only @Curator saw my email to them (he was in carbon copy), i'm publishing my email message to put their answer into context:

lukaprincic.si/blog/use-of-cre

the important part from my email was:
>> we (mastodon.art) wanted to include CC icons as emojis for different CC licences
in order to promote and motivate the use of CC and enable attractive way
how creators can mark their posts where they announce new CC-licenced works <<
