So... been away from social media, away from FOSS, away from other things... now, during the hell of a “special” time we’re going through, I’ve been rethinking a lot of things and remembered I used to like it here.
Hope to find some familiar faces, like @eylul and @ScribbleAddict (does this tagging system even still work?)
Does anyone have suggestions of contacts and calendar apps alternative to Google’s on Android? I don’t know how to phrase it nor do I know if it is asking too much, but I’d like alternatives that make sense to use, that is, that offer some form of privacy. If I’m going to be tracked anyway I guess I’ll stick with the stock ones. Thanks!
I’ll get back to something I said a while ago: I definitely see an advantage of micro.blog over Mastodon in that the former let’s you own your content much more than the latter. And now you can even post from micro.blog to Mastodon since it’s compatible with ActivityPub. If you stop and think, Mastodon is still a silo. I’d like to see people discuss its pros and cons.
Having my whole email history accessible is handy, but email accounts that respect users’ privacy are expensive if one is to store 10+ GB that grows day by day. So, in case anyone is interested, here’s my plan: I have an “unlimited” Google Drive from work (G Suite). I’ll regularly have Thunderbird export my emails in plain-text+attachments to a Cryptomator vault inside Google Drive. Then Google can’t read them but I can, even from mobile. Just have to figure out how to automate this.
Some advice of sorts to new folks, thick skin
Hello and welcome to Mastodon! You might stumble a bit getting to know the place/culture, and that's okay.
While it might look similar, in my experience most of the fediverse is more genuine and accepting than Twitter. You don't have to be as on edge when posting. You don't have to be "this is my opinion, fight me".
We're super trans-friendly, non-binary friendly, furry-friendly (and not just on meow), disabled-friendly, autism-friendly, etc. Relax.
Hey there, coming back after a long time away. Still interested in everything I said in my #introductions : #music, #musicology, #socialSciences, #history, #artWithOpenSource etc. and still interested in finding more musicians around here.
Maybe posting this here is a bit like preaching to the choir, but, anyway, I think everybody should give it some attention: https://corydoctorow.miraheze.org/wiki/My_talk_on_the_Internet_of_Things,_wealth_disparity,_surveillance,_evidence-based_policy_and_the_future_of_the_world
