🎨 maybe you create art, photography, design, using software like #krita #gimp #ardour #blender, #darktable, #mypaint #inkscape
🎼 ...and music using #ardour #lmms #kxstudio #hydrogen #puredata or distros like #ubuntustudio
📝 ...or when writing stories your tools to go are #plume #libreoffice or #zim
📽 Maybe you make films and animation with #kdenlive #pitivi #synfig
🎮 ...or make games with #godot or #twine
🛠 You might be using tools like #robocut #openCAD #processing or #arduino to create your art or design of any form
🎪 or simply creating art using traditional mediums, doing work in performance art, circus arts or theatre, using any of the above or others to create or document your work.
are you an artist or creative in the most generic sense of the word, and use #FOSS / #FLOSS / #OpenSource software as part of your workflow?
consider tagging your works with
🐧 #artWithOpenSource tag and check out the tag for works by your fellow mastodon artists who also prefer Open Sourced alternatives.
(sibling tags of interest: #linuxartists #flossart #libreMonday and #creativeCommons )
@eylul I use vim for writing :) Though because I tend to max out my 500 chars, I wouldn't have space for an extra tag.
@eylul Thank you for this post; I learned about a lot of new free software! Don't forget about #MuseScore , which lets you make sheet music. https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore
@Azure would love to hear more about how you use orgmode for sketching at some point. :)
@Azure @eylul Thanks for pointing out #orgmode. Didn't know that. I ususally take notes for my #dissertation with #Zettelkasten. But switching to #emacs seems to be hard for a #vim and #Atom user, just to use org.
@xldrkp @Azure @eylul Use EVIL-mode -- which applies vim keybindings to emacs. Here's one writeup: http://www.lukeswart.net/2015/04/lightning-intro-to-emacs-using-evil-mode-and-org-mode/
@eylul what a massive list of tools to try. :) , I was lucky to stumble upon your post. Thank you for that.
artists, musicians, creatives!
if you use #opensource / #foss /#floss software such as #krita #gimp #blender #godot #lmms #processing #puredata and others
consider tagging your works with #artwithopensource :)
@eylul And if you don't use those tools, consider giving them a go!
@eylul What about #writers who use #FOSS tools like Vim, Emacs, LibreOffice, etc? Should they use #artwithopensource too?
@starbreaker yep! if you are posting your fiction as a VERY long thread directly to mastodon, maybe consider tagging once/twice by chapter or story, rather than each one but yes writing is welcome. :)
@eylul I think I'll probably share my fiction via links instead, but thanks for the advice. :)
@eylul Wait, I can post about my Twine game and tag it as art with open source? That feels like cheating!
@cidney why would that be cheating? and yes you can. :)
@eylul Also: Inform6 is open source! My IFComp entry was in Inform6. https://github.com/DavidKinder/Inform6/blob/master/licence.txt
@eylul Also considering adding Ink (an open-source plain text scripting language for game narratives) to the list of #FLOSS tools for gamedev. https://www.inklestudios.com/ink/
@eylul wow this list is like a knowledge base of programs for artists and designers 👌.
#scribus #darktable #inkscape
#FOSS #designedWithOpenSource #artWithOpenSource
@Pedro I hadn't thought of it that way, but I guess it is. It is unfortunately missing several programs (mostly due to char limit :D)
