interesting thing i learned recently is apparently the cave paintings which have multiple overlapping figures and obscuring carved lines are actually supposed to be ancient animation, sort of like lenticular prints where a different image is seen based on the angle of light hitting it. you're supposed to view the paintings under a moving lantern to actually see the animated movement.

If you got the Indie bundle for Palestinian aid already, Dates & Wires is now part of the 1200+ games included with it, and if you haven't, there's still 12 hours to go :D There are some great titles on there, but also an important cause

Interwebs hot take

Maybe we wouldn't need CDNs with all the widespread downtime they cause if we didn't have so much JavaScript on websites inflating their page sizes 2-10x.

CDNs make the web faster by making sure a copy of the site is stored somewhere close to each user. But we can also make the web faster by just sending less data.

If CDNs were only used by sites that truly need them (e.g. streaming services), outages wouldn't bring so much of the web down.

To the Ko-Fi Anon who was asking about my Casper PSX maps: Thanks for the Ko-Fi! The maps were made by screencapturing the game in an emulator. It took many, many screenshots.

Sorry, I don't have any fancy tools to rip entire maps from games xP Such tools would usually have to be game-specific, so just taking a lot of screenshots is often faster than writing tools.

Know y’all don’t live nearby, but wanted to show off my flyer - I like how it turned out!

Complaining about Windows and Windows users

I feel Microsoft's decision to make Windows hide file extensions by default has made the average Windows user ignorant of how files work in general.

It has made providing tech support to Windows users of various software harder. They're only able to understand instructions using their specific file names because they don't understand the file types.

Well-designed software should gently guide users towards greater knowledge, not hide it.

Discourse (forum software) has a nearly identical set-up with a toolbar and the preview, but you can't disable either, so even if you're a Markdown wiz you still have to deal with the clutter and laggy preview.

And in addition to Markdown, Buttondown supports HTML, which is great because I can never remember the correct syntax for links in MD, but I'll never forget <a href="url">link text</a>.

Trying out buttondown.email for newsletters and I love the way they set up rich text editing. Instead of switching editors or forcing one, it's just "Show toolbar" and "show markdown preview" as checkboxes. Clean, quick, respects your intelligence.

I wish more sites did it like this instead of complicating it in the interest of presenting a "fool-proof" UI.

Made a post about using RSS to custom build your own personal feed to give you a list of comic updates! RSS is old school, but still incredibly useful when every Major Social Media is ruled by algorithms 🤘😎 Very useful if you read a lot of webcomics! ea.asmodrawscomics.com/2021/05

Webcomic artists! Make sure your home site looks decent on mobile as well as desktop/tablet - I can't speak for all, of course, but more than half my audience is reading on their phones week to week 📱📈

So many times I've got bogged down on an asset that I can't quite get to look quite right.

Starting from scratch feels like going backwards but I've learnt it's almost always the quickest way to get out the rut and produce a much better artwork.

@Krita Does Krita have some way to contribute towards development on a specific feature, or to outright sponsor a feature?

I'd like to buy some love for the Text Tool if I can.

One thing Tumblr got right was not giving a shit about showing you follower counts on other blogs
Follower clout has no power there haha
