@he_xie @dragonlaurita YEP!! Twitter twisted it even more, people just post references of their characters and expect people to draw them [for free]. On Instagram - where it started - it was at least meant to be a style exercise kind of thing. Although I'm cynical and see that as yet another way for popular artists to market themselves (since everyone would be tagging them across the website). Which is kinda... gray area right there.

@he_xie @dragonlaurita I should clarify, on Instagram it started as the artist posting a simple drawing (usually a portrait) and encouraging people to draw the same, but in their own style. Then they'd post the collage of those drawings and tag everyone.

On Twitter, all I see is people posting reference of their OCs and saying "Draw my OC if you want!" which is not what the DrawThis... was originally intended for. :/

@he_xie @dragonlaurita & I'm extra cynical about Instagram because I have friends who are hyper-focused on making it their workplace and growing on that platform almost exclusively, so they feel they have to do all of these things to gain attention from the already established artists. Since the algorithm keeps getting worse. It's really sad and fucked up when you think about it.

I saw this meme for the first time on /ic/ (shame shame shame but I was looking for ideas for art memes) and it was very "hey draw a fast sketch of my oc if you want " and it looked very chill. not it sounds very sad from the both side, from those artists who just want freebies and those depserate people who want attention ;-;
