The economy is not worth people's lives. Not even one life. The economy is made up numbers, people are real.


"The economy" is a yardstick, to measure how certain aspects of society are doing.

If your yardstick breaks, that's certainly inconvenient.

But the society, and the people living in it, need to be supported with or without the yardstick.
