Pinned toot

Hey, everyone! After much soul searching, we're moving as of today to be amongst the other film fanatics at laserdisc.party-- we would love to have you all follow us there at @ScreenTestOfTime

We'll get working on following all of y'all back, and thanks to @Curator for all their support here. 👋

Pinned toot

We are two amateur critics (and I mean *really* amateur) watching and reviewing every movie ever nominated for Best Picture, in order, from the first awards ceremony to (someday) the present year.

Best friends on different coasts, Suzan lives in New York, David lives in Los Angeles, and every week we watch the same movie for our , Screen Test of Time.

Obviously, we're into , no matter how much the Academy's choices try to convince us otherwise.

I made Halloween stickers for some friends this year, but hopefully I can make them available for sale in the future!

To move instances or not to move instances?

Been giving it a lot of thought, and I love everything about mastodon.art, but sometimes I feel like we belong over at laserdisc.party more.

What do y'all think?

Not necessarily a "scary" movie, per se, but The Seventh Seal (1957) is a good spooky flick to watch today. CW: for witch burning, death, Death (personified), existential symbolism involving a squirrel, and chess as a metaphor

I'd pay $50 for a copy of a Will Smith recording of an updated version of "Nightmare On My Street" that was super political rather than a movie tie-in.

“Please ma’am, may I have some spooky?”

Screen Test of Time's Top 5 NOT to Watch on Halloween because they scared the crap out of me

I have just learned from @porsupah that there are 30 additional minutes to Event Horizon that were cut for being TOO gruesome and scary, that were discovered, of all places, in a Transylvanian salt mine, WTF.

I told David and his response was, "Ummm no that’s where hell spat out footage IT made and for the love of God LEAVE IT THERE."

If you want to watch them, though: lostmediaarchive.wikia.com/wik

@ScreenTestofTime Mercifully, what we saw of Event Horizon was actually considerably cut down - and much less graphic - than the director originally intended; hence the various continuity issues, as the studio insisted it be brought down in runtime, so he excised some thirty minutes.

Guessing I wouldn't enjoy it much today, given my reaction to Candyman the other night..

Screen Test of Time's Top 5 NOT to Watch on Halloween because they scared the crap out of me

1. The Ring (2002) - No, it's not the story. It's not even Samara. It's the girl they find in the closet at the beginning I couldn't stop seeing every time I closed my eyes.
Number of days I slept with the lights on after: 365 or more

3. The Exorcist (2000 director's cut) - THE CRAB WALK, OMG
Number of days I slept with the lights on after: ~2 months

2. Requiem for a Dream (2000) - I will fight anyone who says this is not a horror movie.
Number of days I slept with the lights on after: probably none, but I did sit in my chair in the theater sobbing and unable to move for 30 minutes afterward and couldn't drive for 2 or 3 hours

5. Fright Night (1985) - saw when I was 6 because I convinced my Cool Babysitter that my mom would totally let me see it.
Number of days I slept with the lights on after: ~a week

4. Event Horizon (1997) - walked out of the theater half way through the second time because I seriously started crying I was so scared.
Number of days I slept with the lights on after: ~a month

One of these years I should spend the month of October building a homebrew pipe organ in my back yard so I can torture the neighborhood with poorly executed Bach fugues on Halloween.

Sure, I could use synths, but when you're going for atmosphere you can't beat actual moving wind.

Screen Test of Time's Top 5 to Watch on Halloween - David's List

Me: Night of the Living Dead original or remake? [FYI, I put in the years-- he hadn't clarified]

David: Oh original. I don’t give a shit about fast vs slow zombies but like... Don’t make the movie NOT about racism if you do it again for Christ sakes.

Screen Test of Time's Top 5 to Watch on Halloween - Suzan's List

I'm a *total* wuss when it comes to ghosts, haunted houses, or demonic possession, so I tend toward zombies, aliens, monsters, or funny horror movies.

Here's my list, in no particular order except number 1:

5. The Faculty (1998)

4. Beetlejuice (1988)

3. Jennifer's Body (2009)

2. Let the Right One In (2008) - the Swedish one, obviously

1. 28 Days Later (2002) - one of my favorite movies of all time full stop
