I had a friend who has never had a ask me for a software solution to replace their hand-written planner.

What suggestions do you have for a non-technical user?

@RussSharek My primary software calendar is the iCloud calendar, but obviously if they aren't running iOS/OSX that isn't super useful.

Honestly though I love my #bulletjournal, and as someone who chronically ignores notification-dings, find it keeps me far more on top of my schedule than a software calendar does.

@DistroJunkie

Not sure about the desktop, though I believe the phone is android

@RussSharek
Etar is a good calendar app for android that you can use offline and even in concert with an online calendar.

@RussSharek there are not too many privacy-oriented ones around if we're talking about cloud ones. Nextcloud has them but that may be to much.
If they don't need sync there should be plenty of apps but they depend on the platform I guess

@RussSharek But but but why? The planner is perfect if it works for them?

@ckeen

It isn't perfect for the user in question, hence the question.

@RussSharek I guess he can go for NextCloud and it's calendar app. He can create an account on a public instance in order not to pay anything. (I run one, cloud.maly.io)

@kindly

Is there a list of public instances to peruse?

@RussSharek I looked a bit and don't seem to find a website like joinmastodon.org/ for NextCloud. Well, most instances are meant to be private.

@kindly

That I feel compelled to type this speaks to how much Mastodon has changed my perspective:

I never said, "He."

@RussSharek I'm not into the gender-neutral stuff. I don't mean to be rude or anything, but it's really complicating people's life. It's only a conversation.

Mastodon has done so much things for this, and I'm not against it in any way (please understand that), but I won't be participating.

@kindly

It wasn't a matter of being for or against anything. I never gendered the friend you inadvertently mis-gendered.

Doesn't harm me, or the friend in question, but it speaks to assumption and seemed worth mentioning.

No harm, no foul. Carry on.

@RussSharek Oh well. Some people seem to get very angry about this, others don't.

@kindly

I can fundamentally disagree with you without getting angry. It's part of some weird mutation I have called compassion.

Same weirdness allowed me to see the point about not making assumptions.

@RussSharek I believe that fastmail.com has a calendar. If your friend is non-technical, a paid service might be the simplest solution.

@ron

Seems odd to get a new email just to use a calendar. :)

@RussSharek
Yeah, I guess I was just thinking if they wanted privacy for a calendar then maybe the email might follow as well.

@RussSharek
Depends on what features they need but some possibilities are...

Lightning calendar plug-in for Thunderbird.

Emacs Org Mode for organizing information and to-do lists. Very little Emacs knowledge required.

I'm sure there are others.

@RussSharek I know a lot of people who went from a planner to Google Calendar for its calendar sharing, but have privacy concerns. I'm not aware of any other software solution that's accessible to non-technical users unless maybe they have someone to set it up. I'd love to hear about any recommendations.
