So obviously chronological feed is better than an algorithmic feed (especially the way insta is now, where you have to pay to get your content in front of people, and if the people you follow don't post the way insta wants, you'll never see their content). But also purely chronological easily results in missed content too, because you can't (and shouldn't) monitor your feed 24/7.

Right now it's not a big deal because I don't follow that many people, so my feed is easy to scroll through. I can scroll for maybe 10 minutes and get caught up to the last time I logged in. But if Mastodon continues to grow (which I think would be a good thing?) it will be harder and harder to keep up with content and people I follow... and then you just end up with a different flavor of endless scroll.

Not a perfect solution, but can turn on notifications for whenever someone you're following posts (might be too much though).
Or if you have an idea of which users you don't want to miss out on, I think the list feature lets you view a timeline of content from only people on the list? Havent actually tried it myself.

@max Oh that's a good point. I was kinda sorting people into lists but I haven't been utilizing it... I may rethink my structure and try again. Thanks!

@JLGribble I agree overall, I still prefer a chronological timeline (maybe in part because some sites only connect me with 1% of my audience now), but it has its drawbacks. I suppose having more regular times for posting main works as opposed to general chitchat might help more people know when to expect an artist’s work? I’ve seen people boosting their own work, and I initially thought it seemed sort of spammy, but I can see how it can be useful now that you mention it.

@JLGribble you can create lists with accounts in them, some people here create those to have a column for people posting less (as their content can be "lost" in the mass of other's posts)
Social Media Meta
@JLGribble You could make Lists based on time zones?

I guess I bring it up because... I'm curious if anyone else has been thinking about this. And also, I've noticed some folks boosting their own posts, and in the case of one artist I follow, it actually resulted in me seeing pieces of theirs that I hadn't yet, even though they were posts that I should have seen, since I follow them. So I guess that's an okay strategy??
