Due to lots of questions recently, I'd like to clarify some of our philosophies regarding instance blocking:
In our CoC/ToS, we state that we may block instances that don't abide by a CoC/ToS similar to our own (and we have always been clear about what is acceptable behaviour for •ART).
This includes instances that don't moderate their users for harmful ideologies under the banner of "free speech".
Many of our users come from marginalized communities/identities, and their safety is our top priority. We make the decision not to federate with instances that allow racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, far-right, or other abusive ideologies on their instance, not because of "censorship", but because we believe in working hard to create a community that will be as safe as possible for our users.
Let me or your mod team know if you have any questions. <3
@kitsune Hello! We have our reasons listed here: https://mastodon.art/about/more#unavailable-content Mainly, fedi.absturztau.be federates with an instance called Kiwifarms, which is a community that has caused real damage to some of our users in the past. Associating with them is a huge red flag for us.
Also, freespeechextremist.com has a history of harassment and abuse toward marginalized communities, so being friendly toward them is also a red flag.
I hope that clears things up!
@kitsune I appreciate your point of view. I have already had a private discussion with the admin of fedi.absturztau.be about our decision. Ultimately it comes down to a difference in philosophy on how we utilize instance blocks.
It's okay to disagree! The beauty of the is that users can find another instance to join if they don't like our instance block policies. We've always been open about them to our users.
