I feel like every year I fall behind further and further, I'm often like "well, I can't believe anyone is jumping through these hoops-", but then, nobody else does, it's like once you fall off the threadmill of latest phone, latest google this, latest apple that and everything gets more painful. They're all interlocked systems that need each other to work properly.

One day it'll be, well screw this, I can't internets anymore.

I cannot overstate how much having an #eBike has made my town more accessible to me. With a traditional bike, I couldn’t get to most places I need and want to be, due to significant hills that my knees can’t cope with. The eBike effectively turns moderate hills into flats, and hard hills into easy hills.

Combined with the range boost—I can ride light terrain for about 90 minutes before pain, which means about a 12-ish mile range on a trad bike; but more like 21-22 on the eBike—I can access almost everything I need by bike. Only a few things are too far or involve bulk I can’t manage on the bike.

Had a useful and cathartic talk about creativity at work today.

College, grades, and the western capitalist conception of value are all things that destroy play, which is the source of power for creativity and art.

Each one of us admitted ways that process had damaged our ability to be creative.

Using alt text is super important. Please continue to use it. It really makes a world of difference!!! I love how mastodon is very inclusive with all type of disabilities and everyone here is so kind. I have not seen any other social media use this much alt text. I just want to give a gentle reminder and a huge thank you!!!! :)

The DOS Games Jam has started! This is a casual, unranked jam for creating games that would fit in with the games released for DOS. Tabletop games and zines inspired by games from that era are welcome too! The page also lists tools for creating DOS games

unix history & women

It makes me sad that the women who are mostly responsible for making Unix on personal computers possible aren't talked about much, because of figures like RMS & Torvalds (and whoever he argued with on usenet - Andy comes to mind) coming to dominate history.

I know shockingly little about Lynne Jolitz, despite her being pivotal to affordable Unix on the i386 being possible.

I know that there were women involved with the development of Coherent but I'd have difficulty even naming them. (seems connected that most of the early 386 Unixes were developed by family business?)

The old Bell Labs documentaries always make it seem like most of the earliest Unix users were women as well.

theres the 2 extremes of open source projects, "guy who lives alone in the forest isolated from society with his 2006 thinkpad, publishes code using gitweb, signs his commits with 4 keys, has multiple gnu stickers on the laptop and refuses to acknowledge that User Interface Design is a real thing"

and

"some 19 year old on github who just wrote 20 lines of code, imported 30 templates and set up 50 ci pipelines for every commit that automatically add emojis after every word in readme and build his todo list into a docker container, tries really hard to look like microsoft, probably hosts code on github.com/hypertodohq/hypertodo or something, has 10 different hacktoberfest stickers on his laptop"

and yknow

i just wish more projects were kinda at the reasonable middle instead of being one or the other end of the foss guy spectrum

I visited the botanical garden yesterday and saw this giant installation called "l'expedition végétale", thought that some of you might appreciate the solarpunk aesthetics of it :)

Book looks good. It's where we are now.

As I keep saying, it's all about mass damage minimisation and preparation now. We need to mitigate, but also start preparing for life on a hostile planet, where ever possible.

Huge change is coming and it is inevitable.

Start a blog. Don't amplify stuff you disagree with. Mute stuff that bugs you. Focus; veer occasionally. Add context to links. Consider waiting a day after writing something before posting it. Write for yourself first. Expect to not know what you have to say until you've written.

CONTENT WARNING FOR LINKED VIDEO: bugs, darkness, sexuality, trauma and mental illness. FLASH WARNING as well.

my first music video has crawled out from the darkness. it’s for a song called ᴀʀᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ᴏᴋ?, an instrumental electronic track with a sample of my voice turned into a synth lead. most sounds from this track are original samples reworked in software, having been collected in a park beneath a full moon and lunar eclipse. the video started out as an experiment and turned into an endurance-testing ritual, filmed in one night after a storm.

this song is about a worm i met in the park while collecting the aforementioned samples. it is also about coming back from the dead and wanting to fuck shit up while being secretly very sad about it. it is dark, weird, suggestive, and intense (standard Hex fare). it’s also funny somehow and very rude (inevitable). enjoy to any who partake and thank you for watching my danse macabre.

many thanks and deep gratitude for @ritualdust for her skills in helping me bring this ecstatic monstrosity to life. and thank you also to Christophe Daigle of Blkkwave Studio (blkkwavestudio.com/) for the excellent mixing and mastering.

@winduptoy I hope I can encourage a few people to write their own systems too, in their own favourite languages.

Not too many players in this space right now..

I personally believe that over the course of transition, dysphoria slowly morphs into the same kind of body self-consciousness that all cis women face
